20 Questions With UNCP Senior Setter Ashlyn Rebok
If you weren't playing volleyball, what UNCP team would you want to be a part of?
I decided tennis, mainly because it's a similar kind of sport to volleyball, but also because I wouldn't have to do too much running. I wasn't interested in soccer because I can't run, and I would have said swimming but we don't have a swim team, so tennis it is. I actually learned in Coach Friday's class that part of volleyball was taken from tennis.
Where would you want to go for your dream vacation?
I'd like to go to Fiji because it's exotic and has the beach. I saw these pictures of houses on the water on Pinterest there and it just looks beautiful.
If someone made a movie about your life what would it be called?
10 Steps to Becoming a Sarcastic Diva
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
Misty Mae Treanor has always been such an idol in volleyball and now she's got a family. She's a great role model. I got a chance to be coached from one of her old teammates.
When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an architect. I was in Spain this past summer and they have all of these great old buildings and gorgeous types of architectures. I always wanted to build my own house. I'm a health and physical education major now, but I took art classes all throughout high school and different drafting classes, so I'm always still considering it.
Which do you prefer, Facebook or Twitter?
I'm more of a fan of Twitter because people are more honest and you can actually see who they are. The thing is with Facebook is your whole family is on it, so you have to kind of censor yourself.
What is your favorite song to listen to before a game?
"If We Ever Meet Again" by Timberland
Who is the best boy band of all time?
*NSYNC, hands down. I love 'I Want You Back'; I was actually just singing it in study hall.
Would you rather go on a date with Harry Potter or Edward Cullen?
Oh, Harry Potter, he's definitely more of a well-rounded guy, or character. He's more adventurous and solves problem, while Edward Cullen really just makes more problems.
Who is your celebrity look alike?
Ashtin Truesdale helped me with this one, we came up with Charlize Theron because we kind of have the same intense look and similar eyes.
If you could trade places with anyone for the day who would it be?
The team and I collectively agree that we would love to change places with our dogs. We want to know if they can understand what we're saying. You could also spend your whole day lying around on the couch, running around outside. I mean don't you ever wonder what's going on through your dog's mind? I'd love to switch places with my Doberman, her name is Sky, and I'm dying to know what she thinks!
What is your favorite comfort food?
Definitely ice cream, especially chocolate ice cream. I'm a major chocoholic. My new favorite is Sweet Frogs, since there is one in Lumberton now. I'll get strawberry and peanut butter ice cream, with brownies, strawberries, hot fudge and peanut butter sauce. It's so good.
Have you ever met anyone famous?
I met Stevie Wonder on an airplane once. We were on our way back from nationals my freshman year at my junior college and we had a layover in Detroit and Stevie Wonder ended up being on our flight to D.C.
What is the last movie you saw in theaters?
Ted, it was dumb humor but I liked it. I don't really go to the movies that often, I wish I did though. I like waiting for movies to come out on Redbox and then it's only one dollar.
Do you have any game day superstitions?
It's kind of weird, but I will always wear a piece of clothing that has the other team's color. I've been doing it ever since I was in junior high.
What is one thing you want to happen before you leave UNCP?
Before I leave UNCP I want to have new goals in place that relate to what I want to do after I graduate. I had goals set in high school, and then again in junior college, that I was able to reach, so I need to create new challenges for myself. I've experienced all that I want to do at UNCP, so it's time for me to move on and start planning my next steps.
How do you want people to remember you at UNCP?
I want to be thought of as a hardworking and motivated. I do my best to really put all I've got into school and athletics, on the court for my teammates. It's really important for my teammates to know I was there for them and they can do the same for when they're seniors.
What is your best advice to youngsters?
Set goals for yourself and believe you can achieve everything you set your mind to, even if things don't necessarily fall the way you want them to. If you stay persistent, everything can work out how you planned it.
Why did you come to UNCP?
My junior college coach is an alumnus of UNCP and she played volleyball here. Also, a senior from last year, Rebecca Morgan, is from my same area in Pennsylvania. She got recruited by UNCP and I felt some comfort in knowing somebody in the program. I knew I wanted to move south, and Pembroke is a pretty good location because it's fairly close to the beach and a lot of big cities. I find a lot of value in being a Division II athlete and although Pembroke isn't the biggest town, I'm still able to get the same experiences.
What do you love about UNCP?
I love the people I've met and the opportunities I've been given as a part of the student athlete community. I wish there were more people that could see what means to be a part of a team as well as a part of a larger community of athletes. I think something that's really great, is that all of the student athletes here really support one another.
