Third Quarter Swing Helps Braves Topple Newberry On Homecoming

Box Score

PEMBROKET.J. Johnson caught one touchdown pass and threw for another to help fuel a 21-point third quarter that helped home-standing UNCP rally back from a 14-0 first quarter deficit and defeat Newberry, 31-24, on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

The triumph helped the Braves (6-3) snap a two-game losing streak, as well as improve to 5-1 all-time in Homecoming games in Pembroke. Newberry (5-4), who debuted at No. 9 in last week's NCAA Super Region 2 poll, lost for the fourth time in the last five games after winning each of its first four outings of the season.

Luke Charles registered his fifth career 300-yard passing game with 335 yards and a pair of scores on 29-of-43 passing, while Te'vell Williams hauled in nine catches for 110 yards and a third quarter touchdown. Donald Britt, one of 12 seniors honored before kickoff, tallied a career high eight catches for 73 yards and a touchdown as well, while Johnson accounted for a career-best 111 all-purpose yards, including three catches for 38 yards.

W.T. Murden threw for 298 yards on 29-of-46 passing for Newberry who was held to its third-lowest rushing total of the season. Jason Livingston caught nine of Murden's passes for a team-best 83 yards, while Corey Washington (5-51) and Byron Dickerson (3-75) both logged touchdown receptions.

"I am very excited for our senior class that we were able to send them out with a victory against a very good football team," said UNCP head coach Pete Shinnick. "I was happy with the way that we responded after being down at halftime because we haven't been able to do that the last couple of weeks. Our guys didn't give up and they didn't lose faith in anything that we were doing."

Newberry set the tone early by driving 75 yards on 12 plays on the game's opening possession to take a quick 7-0 lead, and then used special teams to aid a touchdown drive on its ensuing possession that put the Wolves up 14-0 with 6:58 left in the opening period. The Black & Gold responded with the game's next 10 points, including a 1-yard scoring plunge by Elliott Powell midway through the second quarter, but Newberry tacked on a 19-yard field goal as time expired to lug a 17-10 advantage into the locker rooms.

UNCP needed just six plays and 80 seconds to tie the score on its opening possession of the second half, and then used Johnson's 42-yard touchdown pass to Britt two minutes later to put the caps on a 2-play, 57-yard scoring drive that drained just 48 seconds off the clock. The Braves added an insurance score later in the period when Charles found Williams in the back of the end zone to cap a 5-play, 71-yard scoring drive.

The visitors cut their deficit to back to seven points, 31-24, on Murden's 5-yard touchdown pass to Dickerson with 5:22 left to play, but UNCP converted on two key third down plays down the stretch to milk the remainder of the clock.

The Braves will close out the 2012 regular season on November 10 when they trek to Wheeling, W.Va., to battle West Liberty (5-4) in a 1 p.m. contest at Russek Field. The Hilltoppers were a 41-29 winner over conference rival Seton Hill earlier Saturday.
