PEMBROKE – Junior Marissa Baker posted a double-double for the Lady Braves as they fell in three straight sets to Peach Belt Conference opponent Armstrong Atlantic, 25-12, 25-20 and 25-7, on Friday evening at the English E. Jones Center.
Baker led UNCP (5-12, 0-4 PBC) in kills (15), digs (11) and service aces (2), in the setback, as Armstrong (16-3, 0-4) picked up its eighth consecutive victory and remained unbeaten PBC play. The Pirates played with an overwhelming offense, notching 41 kills and 13 service aces. Megan Pando and Ashley Seal had five service aces apiece to lead the Pirates. Seal also dished out a team-high 25 assists.
The Lady Braves played their best offense in the second set collecting 13 kills for a .242 hitting percentage. Senior Shay Peterson was powerful on offense and defense for the Black and Gold with four kills and a solo block in the second set. Peterson had six kills overall and another block with the help of newcomer Julie Larsen.
Armstrong's offense was led by the powerful hitting of Ashley Seal and Carina Marinho who each slammed eight kills down. Jessica Santaniello and Amanda Jones added another seven kills apiece for the Pirates. Defensively, the Pirates garnered seven blocks, including one solo block from Jones.
UNCP will be back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they play host to PBC foe Flagler at the English E. Jones Center.
