Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The UNCP women's soccer team notched 10 shots on goal on Saturday, as the Lady Braves ended with a 2-2 tie with Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia College at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats (5-6-1, 2-4-1 PBC) got on the board within the first five minutes of the match, and outshot the Lady Braves (5-4-2, 2-4-1) 27-23 through 110:00 minutes of play. UNCP tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half, as Amalia Arvidsson picked up her seventh goal of the season. Georgia College would score again in the 56th minute, but UNCP would answer to tie the game at two in the 80th minute of play.
"This was a classic battle between two teams that have not quite found their stride yet. It was a slug fest and when the dust settled, 2-2 in double overtime was a fair result," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We had to come from behind twice and I am hoping our 'never say die' effort today will help us fuse together and find a true identity as a team," Andersson said.
There was no scoring done by either squad in two overtimes. The Lady Braves got off more shots than the Bobcats in the additional 20:00 minutes of action. UNCP registered five shots, with Andrea Collèn taking the final shot in the 109th minute. Georgia College was only able to take one shot in each overtime period.
Arvidsson put the Lady Braves on the board in the 48th minute of play, tying the game up at one all. Haley O'Hayer then answered for the Bobcats in the 56th minutes on an unassisted goal giving Georgia College a 2-1 lead. With only ten minutes left in regulation, Arvidsson connected with freshman Julia Nytorp for UNCP's second goal of the game. The Bobcats were only able to get off two more shots before the end of regulation.
UNCP and Georgia College took 10 shots apiece in the first half of the match. Abby Dalton gave the Bobcats a quick 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of action, with assists from Lindsey Knott and Ashley Veilleux.
Britney Bennett played a perfect 110:00 minutes in the net for the Black and Gold, collecting 12 saves. The Bobcats used Annie Stephens and Taylor Cornelius between the pipes, playing 82:27 and 27:33, respectively. Stephens recorded seven saves, while Cornelius added one more save Georgia College.
"I am proud of the team and feel very confident we are headeded in the right direction," said Andersson.
The Lady Braves will be back in action on Tuesday as the squad travels to Murfreesboro for a nonconference match up with Chowan (1-10-0) at 3 p.m.
