Box Score MURFREESBORO – The UNCP women's soccer team shattered a three-year-old school record by firing off 52 to shots to overwhelm Chowan in a 6-nill victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Hawks Soccer Complex.
UNCP's (6-4-2) 52 shots broke a record established by the 2009 squad in a victory over Georgia Southwestern on October 10 of that season. Sophomore keeper Janae Aiken picked up her first career shutout over Chowan (1-12-0), collecting four saves. The Lady Braves overpowered the Hawks on offense, with Chowan taking only 11 shots. UNCP garnered a .468 shots-on-goal percentage, with 25 shots on target for the net. Chowan was unable to take any corner kicks in 90:00 minutes of action, while UNCP notched seven.
"It was a convincing performance from start to finish. The passing was much improved, our shape in the attack was better and we played with great pace and a sense of urgency in the final third," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We still have some areas to address in training but I feel very confident we are headed in the right direction going into the last stretch of our regular season schedule."
Five minutes into the second half, sophomore Amalia Arvidsson tallied her eighth goal of the season, on an assist from Rae-Shawna Campbell, into net on the far right side to put the Lady Braves up by five. In the 65th minute of play, Julia Nytorp put the game away with a shot into the upper left corner of the box, marking her fifth goal of the 2012 campaign.
The game-winning goal was posted in the first ten minutes of action when a Chowan defender inadvertently kicked the ball into her own net. Campbell added the second goal for the Black and Gold in the 21st minute of action off of a crossbar into an open net, with help from Fanny Forsman. The scoring continued for the Lady Braves in the 37th minute when Elke Groothuis scored on a mishandled ball by the Chowan keeper and an assist from Andrea Collèn. Less than a minute later, Forsman, with a contribution from newcomer Sherrie Gessin, added a fourth goal for UNCP inside the box far from a diving Chowan keeper.
"We took some injuries during our 2-2 OT draw against GCSU and I am proud of the kids that came off the bench today and filled in the holes. It was a total team effort," Andersson said.
Morgan Klein took a team-best three shots for the Hawks, while Emily Cross fired two shots on goal. Jennifer Harvell played all 90:00 between the posts for Chowan, recording 18 saves.
The Lady Braves will return home when they play host to Peach Belt Conference opponent North Georgia (10-2-0, 3-2-0 PBC) on Saturday in Pembroke, at Varsity Grounds. First kick is set for 1 p.m., admission to all 2012 home soccer matches is free.
