Wingate Tops UNCP In OrthoCarolina Classic, 63-56

Box Score

WINGATE – Sophomore Jazmine Kemp was named to the All-Classic Team as she led the UNCP woman's basketball team in scoring and in rebounding on Sunday evening as the Lady Braves fell to Wingate, 63-56, in the final game of the OrthoCarolina Classic at the Cuddy Arena.

The Bulldogs (2-0) won the advantage on rebounds, out-rebounding the Lady Braves (0-2), 42-25. Wingate made good on 16-of-19 free throw attempts to shoot 84.2 percent from the foul line.

Kemp posted 20 points and seven rebounds for UNCP and connected on six-of-eight free throws. Kemp was the only UNCP player to go to the free throw line. Amelia Partin tallied five three point baskets and totaled 15 points for the Black and Gold.

Morgan McGee led the way for the Bulldogs, going six-of-eight from the field and 10-for-10 from the free throw line. McGee dished out three assists and was named the MVP of the All-Classic Team. Trish Logan added 10 points for Wingate, while Janitsha Williams contributed a team-high seven rebounds.

"I think we competed hard, the biggest difference in the game was offensive rebounds and free throws. They made more free throws, that was a big difference. It was a back and forth game the whole way. We were still in the game with two and half minutes, but we weren't able to convert on some shots when we really needed it," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "Jamzine and Amelia both played well, we just have to go with a total team effort and get more people involved."

UNCP drained three consecutive three-pointers to take a 13-6 lead five minutes into the game. Kelli Bonner drilled a triple to lead Wingate on a seven point run. Chandrica Fuller made a layup and Kemp followed with back-to-back free throws to cut the deficit to five at the half.

The Bulldogs entered the second half with a 31-28 lead, but within the first five minutes a three-point bucket from Partin, followed by a drilled free throw by Kemp gave the Lady Braves a 41-40 advantage. Wingate used a three-point play by McGee and a trey from Williams to go on an eight point run to edge UNCP, 48-41. Partin hit a three-point bucket with 16 seconds remaining, but it was too little too late for the Black and Gold.

UNCP will continue on the road as the Lady Braves travel to Laurinburg to take on region rival St. Andrews (1-2) on Wednesday at Harris Court with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
