Box Score Laurinburg – The UNCP women's basketball team used an impressive defense, including 50 rebounds, to shutdown St. Andrews, as the Lady Braves earned a 33-point triumph over the Knights, 61-28, marking the first victory of the 2012-13 season for the Black and Gold on Wednesday evening at Harris Court.
The Lady Braves (1-2) increased their win streak over the Knights (1-3) to six consecutive games. Senior Courtney Bolton led the way for the UNCP offense with 12 points. Bolton was perfect from the field, going 4-for-4. The UNCP bench came up big, as Wayne Mack and Mille Horne added nine points apiece for the Black and Gold. Jazmine Kemp contributed a team-high 10 rebounds and delivered eight points.
Kimayah Fulcher was the leading scorer for SAU, collecting seven points, while Jazmyne Harvey grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
UNCP was able to hold SAU to only eight first half points. The Lady Braves shot 46 percent in three-point territory, connecting on 6-of-13 three-pointers.
"I'm pretty pleased with the defense tonight, holding them to eight first half points. Throughout the game our defensive effort was pretty tough, although we were sloppy offensively. Courtney played better, and Mille came up big late in the game and made some points," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "We've got to get better on the offensive end. We have two tough opponents coming up with Fayetteville State on Saturday and Queens on Monday, so we'll be getting ready for those two."
The Lady Braves will be back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Fayetteville for a non-conference contest with Fayetteville State (2-0), with tip set for 2 p.m.
