PEMBROKE – The UNCP women's volleyball team was swept by Peach Belt Conference rival Lander in three straight sets, 20-25, 24-26 and 25-16, on Saturday afternoon at the English E. Jones center.
Senior Shay Peterson notched her first double-double of the season, as she led the Lady Braves (5-21, 0-12 PBC) in kills and digs with 11 and 13, respectively. The Bearcats (14-13, 6-5) totaled four team blocks, while UNCP was unable to register any blocks in the match. Each squad delivered 15 kills in the second set which saw three different set points. Tarryn Angermeier led Lander, slamming 19 kills to register a .421 hitting percentage.
Lander held onto a consistent lead throughout the first set, as the Bearcats tallied a .250 hitting percentage. Angermeier helped the Bearcats earn a four point run to jump ahead of the Lady Braves 17-12. Marissa Baker served back-to-back service aces to keep UNCP alive, forcing Lander to take four attempts at set point. A kill by Kaitlyn Harrison would secure the first set for Lander.
In the second set the Lady Braves jumped out to an early 7-1 lead over the Bearcats. UNCP held on to its lead over Lander until a kill from Harrison tied it up a 16 all. Despite the back and forth action, the Bearcats finished the set on a 3-1 run, winning set two. Both squads saw their best hitting performance in the second set as Lander hit .316 as a team and UNCP grabbed a .238 hitting percentage.
The Lady Braves took another early lead, 5-2, in the final set when freshman Ashtin Truesdale served four consecutive points, including two service aces. Angermeier would battle back for the Bearcats, bringing the score to 8-8 on four straight serves. The Lander offense delivered 16 kills in the third set, compared to UNCP's 10. A kill from Harrison and a UNCP error would put away the match for the Bearcats.
Ashlyn Rebok dished out 30 assists for the Black and Gold, while Lander's setter, Jessica Register tallied 40 assists. Register also notched a team-high three block assists for the Bearcats. Sawyer Gray added 10 kills and Baker collected 12 digs for UNCP.
UNCP will play its last home match of the 2012 season on Wednesday, as the Lady Braves host Fayetteville State (20-5) in the English E. Jones Center at 6 p.m.
