Pembroke – The UNCP women's volleyball team fell in its final home match to the visiting Broncos of Fayetteville State by a 3-1 final on Wednesday evening in a regional matchup at the English E. Jones Center. Game scores for the match were 23-25, 26-24, 26-24 and 27-29.
The Lady Braves (5-22) were downed by a tough Bronco defense. Fayetteville State (22-5) totaled 10 team blocks, compared to UNCP's five. Both squads played with a fairly even offense, as the Lady Braves notched 53 kills, while the Broncos collected 56. Shay Peterson delivered her second double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs. Peterson earned a team-best two service aces. The Broncos were led by Joi Emanuel and Ifeyinwa Nwokolo with 14 kills and 12 kills, respectively.
UNCP used a .242 hitting percentage to put the first set away. The Lady Braves capitalized on seven Fayetteville State attack errors to set the tone in the set. Back-to-back kills from Sawyer Gray would finish out the first set.
Each squad tallied 42 kills apiece through the final three sets. Despite forcing the Broncos to take multiple attempts at set point through the last three sets, the Lady Braves were unable to pick up another set victory.
Leading the way for UNCP was freshman Ashtin Truesdale, who finished with 15 kills. Truesdale added a service ace and two assists. Ashlyn Rebok dished out a team-best 45 assists. Rebok and Marissa Baker registered 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Paige Horned collected a team-high 27 assists for Fayetteville State, while Molly Farrington contributed an additional 23 assists. Horne also recorded four service aces for the Broncos. Emanuel totaled all three of the Bronco's solo blocks and picked up seven block assists.
The Lady Braves will regroup on the road as the squad travels to Augusta, Ga., on Friday for a Peach Belt Conference contest with Augusta State (17-14, 7-4 PBC) at 6 p.m.
