Berry Helps UNCP Pull Out Sweep Of Chowan, 11-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKE – A season-best 11 runs on 13 hits provided UNCP the outstanding victory in five innings in the second game of the doubleheader with Chowan on Saturday afternoon, 11-1, to capture the series sweep of the Hawks for the third consecutive year.

UNCP (4-9) extended its winning streak in the series to seven games as the Lady Braves held Chowan (2-10) to a season-low two hits. Junior shortstop Holly Berry matched a career-best five RBI from her freshman year in game two with the Hawks.

Kristen Hobbs tallied two RBI, while four others each had one. Freshman catcher Brea Hartley and Ashley Harrell were perfect at the plate with two hits as Hartley had two runs and Harrell had one. Of the total 13 hits, five athletes totaled two hits and three added one hit apiece.

Chowan (2-10) suffered only one run by Leigh Ward as she and Megan Bass were the only Hawks to post one hit each.

Starr Gilley (2-3) pitched three innings in the circle and was relieved by Natalie Klemann for the final two innings. Gilley allowed one earned run and two hits as she struck out three and walked one, while Klemann faced six batters and struck out two.

Allie Kolezynski (1-3) spent 1-2/3 innings in the middle for Chowan as she gave up seven runs (two earned) and seven hits before being relieved by Alora Lincoln. Lincoln allowed six hits and four earned runs in her 2-1/3 innings in the circle.

Despite the Hawks taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning, UNCP drove with full avenge as 12 batters were faced in the bottom on the inning. Kellie Van Dyke started the roll with a double to left field before Megan Hillard smacked the ball off the pitcher to reach first and sent Van Dyke home to tie the score. Harrell allowed Hillard to move to third and Davis pushed Hillard home on a fielding error by the third baseman on her intended sacrifice bunt.

UNCP loaded the bases with Davis on base, Brea Hartley hit by a pitch and Kaytee Wilson walked. Berry stepped up to the plate and railed a shot into deep left field for a double that brought all three batters home. Kristen Hobbs, Van Dyke and Karlee Wilson followed with a double and two-consecutive singles, respectively, to put the Lady Braves ahead by six runs.

"Overall today things clicked well for our team," said UNCP head coach Lacinda Melason. "We were fortunate in that situation in the second inning where people got hot and we made some adjustments offensively."

The third inning started with Harrell's single to the left side before four back-to-back singles by Hartley, Kaytee Wilson, Berry and Hobbs brought in another four runs for UNCP.

The Black and Gold return to action on Sunday when they visit Mars Hill (10-6) in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Ponder Park.
