Hobbs' Single Sends Lady Braves Ahead Of Knights, 2-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKE – Senior Kristen Hobbs singled to left field to score the final run in the seventh inning en route to a clutch 2-1 victory over St. Andrews in game two of the doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon to take the series sweep of the Knights.

Hobbs and Karlee Wilson both posted two hits and one RBI, while Holly Berry and Kaytee Wilson had two hits apiece. Four other athletes for UNCP (8-9) collected one hit to help the Lady Braves total 12 hits during the game.  Mary Cross led St. Andrews (5-15) with two hits, while Jen George and Brittany Gunn registered one hit each. Kim Baird was the only Knight to score.

Natalie Klemann began the game for the Lady Braves in the middle, and pitched four full innings as she allowed one unearned run on two hits and six strikeouts. Starr Gilley (4-3) took over for the final three innings as she had three strikeouts and gave up two hits. Jessie Wiegers (2-5) spent 6-1/3 innings in the circle as she allowed two earned runs.

Kaytee Wilson led off the second inning for UNCP and was advanced to second on Kellie Van Dyke's sacrifice bunt before crossing home plate on the single up the middle by sister Karlee Wilson to give the squad the 1-0 lead. Baird reached first base on a walk by Klemann and scored on a throwing error by the first baseman in the fourth inning to tie the game up at one run apiece.

Megan Hillard positioned herself in scoring position with a double to right center in the seventh inning and was moved to third on the single to left field by Berry. Hobbs ended the game with her single to bring Hillard home, which now extends UNCP's winning streak to six games.

"We are very happy with the wins," said head coach Lacinda Melanson. "We tell the girls all the time that we are not really picky about how we get them, but we just want to make sure we are getting them."

The Lady Braves will take to the road to compete against Davenport (5-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
