Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College broke open a scoreless game with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, and then held off a late rally by UNCP to complete the sweep of the No. 5 Braves with a 3-2 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
The setback marked the sixth-straight loss for UNCP (14-9, 4-7 PBC) who suffered just its second Peach Belt Conference series sweep in the last four seasons as well. Georgia College (13-9, 6-3) matched a season-high with its fourth-straight victory, as well as grabbed its first conference series sweep of the season.
Josh Haley walked and singled twice on a 2-for-4 outing, while four other players recorded base hits for the Braves as well. Patrick Daugherty singled and doubled on a 2-for-3 showing for the Bobcats, who also got two hits apiece from both Tanner Funk (2-for-4) and Benton Yaun (2-for-3).
Alex Pearce (2-3) struck out six and scattered eight hits across his first career complete game, but still took the loss for the Braves after yielding a trio of earned runs. Darin Wiltgen (3-1) was awarded the win for the Bobcats after allowing just a pair of earned runs on seven hits in 7-2/3 innings from the hill. He also struck out four batters. Matt LaMothe booked his third save of the weekend with 1-1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
A pitcher's duel through the first four innings, Georgia College manufactured the first run of the contest, cashing in on a 1-0 lead by virtue of a RBI single from Yaun. The Bobcats would use its short game to manufacture another run in the sixth for a 2-0 lead, but UNCP answered in the top of the seventh, cutting its deficit in half on a sac fly from the bat of Drew Cole.
The Bobcats would stretch their lead back out to a pair of runs on Funk's RBI single in the home half of the frame, but UNCP climbed back to within one score in the eighth when Wiltgen plunked Aaron Parnell with the bases loaded. With ducks on the pond and just one out showing on the scoreboard, Wiltgen got Eitan Maoz to fly out to centerfield before giving way to LaMothe who got Drew Alford on a swinging strike three.
The Black & Gold used a leadoff walk and a successive sacrifice bunt to put a runner into scoring position with one out in the ninth, but LaMothe warded off any comeback attempt by getting Zade Denton to ground out to second base, and then inducing Haley into a game-ending groundout to the shortstop.
The Braves will be back in action again on Wednesday when they open up a 10-game home stand against Coker (13-12) at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch has been set for 5 p.m.
