Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – The UNCP softball team allowed Georgia College to score three runs off walked batters and an additional run on a single to send the Bobcats past the Lady Braves, 4-2, in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday in Peach Belt Conference action.
UNCP (13-17, 2-3 PBC) outhit Georgia College (20-13, 7-2) 8-4 as freshman Kaytee Wilson led the Lady Braves with two hits. Newcomers Brea Hartley and Morgan Davis posted a run each for the Black and Gold. Kelsea Martin notched two hits and two RBI for the Bobcats.
Junior Starr Gilley (5-9) went three innings for UNCP in the middle as she allowed all four runs (three earned), walked four and struck out three, before Natalie Klemann came in to relieve for the final four innings. Klemann struck out three of the 13 batters she faced.
Sabrina Chandler (7-5) collected the win after spending five innings in the middle for Georgia College and allowed five hits and one unearned run, before Erica Bell stepped in for the final two innings. Bell posted the save but did allow one earned run on three hits.
Gilley walked Whitney Okvist to start the game and followed with two outs, until Haley Burnett walked and Martin singled to centerfield to score two runs in the first inning. UNCP put its first run on the board as Hartley singled up the middle and then stole second before moving to third on Kaytee Wilson's single. Hartley crossed home plate on the throwing error by Chandler to bring the Lady Braves to within one run in the third.
The Bobcats increased their lead in the fourth as Burnett reached on a walk and Martin singled to centerfield. Burnett scored on a throwing error by the third baseman and Martin was brought home on a single up the left side by Dani Gallucci. Again the Black and Gold tried to make a comeback with Davis reaching on a single and scoring on a wild pitch, but UNCP was unable to finish the game ahead of the Bobcats.
