Coker Takes Season Series With UNCP

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Visiting Coker used a home run and a costly error to plate a trio of runs in the first and then held UNCP at arm's length the rest of the way out en route to capturing the season series with the Braves with a 6-4 victory on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback snapped a four-game winning streak for the Braves (18-10) who fell to 19-6 all-time against their region rivals from Hartsville, S.C. The triumph snapped a four-game skid for the Cobras (15-16) who used a 6-1 home win over the Black & Gold earlier this season to take the series.

Freshman Zade Denton singled three times and scored once to highlight a perfect 3-for-3 hitting line, while Kyle Adair booked his first home run of the campaign to earmark a 2-for-5 night at the dish. Aaron Parnell (2-for-3, 2 BB) and Eitan Maoz (2-for-5) both tallied multiple-hit nights as well. Coker got multi-hit showings from four different players, including Brinley Griffin who hit a two-run homer in the first to highlight a 2-for-4 hitting exhibition.

Connor Pratt (0-1) struck out six in his first collegiate start, but saddled his first loss as well after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings from the hill. Andrew Goot (6-2) grabbed the win for the Cobras despite yielding a trio of hard-hit balls, including Adair's home run in the second.

The visitors needed just three at-bats to take a quick 2-0 lead thanks, mainly in part, to Griffin's two-run blast, but the Cobras utilized an ill-timed fielding error by the Braves moments later to plate an unearned run and take a 3-0 lead into the second. The Braves would trim their deficit to just a lone run after Adair's monster blast in the second and Maoz's RBI single in the fifth, but Coker would rally for lone insurance runs in each of the next three innings to inevitably seal the outcome.

UNCP will continue its 10-game home stand this weekend when the Braves suit up to host a three-game series with Peach Belt Conference East Division foe Flagler (17-8, 9-3 PBC) at Sammy Cox Field. The squads are scheduled to open up the weekend with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and close out the set with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
