Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – The UNCP softball team suffered six errors and allowed No. 16 Armstrong Atlantic six hits en route to a 3-0 victory over the Lady Braves in the first game of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Sunday at LRA Field.
Senior Ashley Harrell and freshman Brea Hartley both went 2-for-3 in the game that gave UNCP (14-18, 3-4 PBC) four hits. The Lady Braves gave up errors in the first, second, third and sixth innings. Armstrong (30-8, 6-1) was led by April Jowers with two hits, while four tallied a hit apiece. Whitney Galloway scored the only RBI as three different batters crossed home plate.
Starr Gilley (5-10) spent all seven innings in the middle for the Black and Gild and gave up one earned run in the process. Gilley walked two, struck out four and forced the Pirates to leave 11 runners on base. Megan Barnwell (12-3) struck out five batters and walked one as she allowed all four hits during her seven innings.
The Pirates picked up two runs in the second inning as Shelby Duff and Ashley Schwab rounded the bases before collecting another run in fourth by Jowers. UNCP used the seventh inning to attempt a comeback as Kristen Hobbs reached on an error by the centerfielder. Karlee Wilson reached on a fielder's choice and Harrell singled along the left field line, but the Lady Braves suffered the final out on a fielder's choice.
