Braves Complete Sweep Of Flagler With Rout In Finale

Box Score

PEMBROKE – UNCP scored four or more runs across three different innings to support starter Alex Pearce's first career complete game and complete a weekend sweep of visiting Flagler with a 16-5 win over the Saints on Monday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

The triumph helped stretch the Peach Belt Conference winning streak for the Braves (21-10, 9-7 PBC) out to six games, while also helping the Black & Gold register its third league series sweep of the season. Flagler (18-11, 9-6), who came into the weekend atop the PBC East Division, had its losing streak extended to a season-long three games with the setback.

Brad Bridgeman drove in four runs and scored three times himself on a 3-for-5 outing to pace UNCP, while Eitan Maoz plated a pair of runs on a 3-for-5 hitting line. Max Gagnon doubled and drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 day at the plate for the Braves as well. Flagler got three hits apiece from both Cade Smith and Brett Moreland, while John Sgromolo and Charlie Stewart each added a pair of hits as well.

Pearce (4-3) grabbed his second-straight win with efficient work from the hill that saw him offset five runs allowed (four earned) with five strikeouts. Flagler starter Micah Kellogg (0-1) saddled the loss for the Saints after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a pair of walks over 3-1/3 innings of work. It was the first decision in eight starts this season for the senior from Lakewood, N.Y.

A tie game through three complete innings, UNCP broke the contest wide open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and then pushed its lead out to 8-3 with four more runs in the fifth. The Saints scored a pair of runs on Sgromolo's two-run blast  with one out in the top of the eighth, but the Braves answered by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning.

UNCP will continue its 10-game home stand on Tuesday when the Braves suit up to welcome Winston-Salem State (20-15) to Pembroke for a 6 p.m. contest at Sammy Cox Field.
