Box Score PEMBROKE – UNCP staked claim to a 7-1 lead heading to the third and offset a trio of costly errors with its 22nd double-digit hit attack of the season en route to an 11-6 victory over visiting Winston-Salem State on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The triumph helped the Braves (22-10) stretch their winning streak out to four games, while also giving the Black & Gold its eighth win in the last nine outings. The setback marked the second-straight loss for CIAA-leading Winston-Salem State (20-16).
Kyle Adair drove in four runs and scored twice on a 2-for-4 outing for the Braves who got multi-hit nights from three other players as well. Aaron Parnell singled three times on four trips to the plate, while Josh Haley doubled twice and scored a trio of runs on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Dalton Knight plated a pair of runs on a 2-for-5 outing as well. Paco Martin doubled twice and scored a pair of runs on a 3-for-5 night for the Rams, while German Reyes doubled and homered to highlight a 2-for-4 night at the dish.
Bryan Collins (1-0) struck out six and allowed just two hits and a pair of runs (one earned) in his first appearance since February 5 (injury) to grab the win for the Braves, while Brandon Estrain struck out three and yielded just four hits and two runs (one earned) in four effective innings of relief. Wesley Edwards (2-3) saddled the tough-luck loss for the visitors after allowing seven runs (one earned) on five hits and a pair of walks in two innings from the hill. He also struck out two.
UNCP scored three runs on a hit, two walks and an ill-timed fielding error in the bottom of the first to grab an early 3-1 lead, and then utilized four hits and a pair of WSSU errors in the second to plate four more runs and lug a 7-1 lead into the third.
The Braves will close out their 10-game home stand on Wednesday when they suit up to host region rival St. Andrews (8-23) in a 6 p.m. contest at Sammy Cox Field.
