Late Rally Pushes Wildcats Past Lady Braves, 6-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Wayne State (Neb.) scored six runs in the sixth inning to capture the 6-2 victory over the UNCP Lady Braves despite an attempted comeback on a windy Sunday afternoon at the NTC Sports Complex.

Junior Holly Berry led the Lady Braves (10-11) with two hits in her four at-bats as well as collecting one run, while four others added one hit apiece. Kaytee Wilson and Kristen Hobbs each totaled one RBI. The Wildcats (4-0) posted 10 hits and were led by Dani Sandel with two hits, while eight athletes each had one. Vicki Nielson collected three RBI on a triple in the sixth inning.

Starr Gilley (4-5) spent all seven innings in the circle for UNCP and gave up six unearned run, while Stephanie Schmidt grabbed the win after spending the final three innings in the middle for the Wildcats. Schmidt followed Kelcie Bormann who allowed one earned run on one hit before taking over and allowing one earned run on four hits.

The Black and Gold put the first run on the board in the fourth inning as Berry tripled to centerfield and was brought home on the sacrifice bunt by Hobbs. The Wildcats began the sixth inning with a single to the shortstop by Sandel followed by Kaiti Williams reaching on an error and Megan Hagemann with a walk. With the bases loaded, Neilsen tripled to centerfield to take the lead. Another two doubles and a single allowed three batters to cross home plate to bring the score to 6-1.

A single by Harrell up the middle followed by Bianca Cacciotti's single and Brea Hartley's walk loaded the bases for Kaytee Wilson in the seventh. A monstrous shot to the leftfield looked to be gone for a grand slam, but the wind changed the direction of the ball, and allowed the outfielder to make the catch at the fence and end the attempted comeback by the Lady Braves.

The Lady Braves will finish off the road trip with a matchup against Valdosta (9-2) on Tuesday at VSU Softball Complex in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
