Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – Montevallo drew 18 walks and reached base four more times on hit by pitches to key three multi-run innings and help the Falcons even up their weekend series with No. 5 UNCP on a 14-5 win over the Braves on Sunday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The loss snapped a 19-game home winning streak for UNCP (14-4, 4-3 PBC) who utilized six pitchers and 250 pitches in the setback. The victory was the seventh win in the last eight outings for Montevallo (9-9, 5-3).
The Braves got 2-for-3 outings from both Josh Haley and Kyle Adair, while Aaron Parnell booked a 2-for-4 outing for the hosts as well. Chris Ross drove in five runs on a 2-for-5 outing for the Falcons, while Heath Peterson walked twice, homered and drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Six different Falcons registered two or more walks, with Zack Willoughby, Vincente Andrews and Austin Dubberly all reaching three times via the base on balls. Blaine Rosenberg walked once, but reached base two other times on hit by pitches.
Brantley Hattrich (3-1) was sent to his first loss of the season after the senior yielded three earned runs on one hit and three walks despite failing to record an out in the fifth. Alex Guilford (2-2) picked up the win for the Falcons despite allowing 10 hits and five runs (four earned) in 6-1/3 innings from the mound.
The Braves took a 4-2 lead on Jordan Edgerton's sac fly in the bottom of the fourth, but the Falcons sent 11 batters to the plate in the big fifth inning to take a lead they would not relinquish. Montevallo had extended its lead out to 11-5 by the end of the seventh, and then capped the scoring on the night with three more runs in the eighth.
Eight Montevallo batters that reached via a free pass (walk, hit by pitch) eventually came around to score a run.
The squads will engage in the series rubber game on Monday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch has been set for noon.
