Box Score PEMBROKE – Visiting Montevallo pounded out 11 hits and scored five runs behind a quality start from Kameron Heiser to help the Falcons register a series-clinching 5-2 win over fifth-ranked UNCP on Monday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
The setback gave UNCP (14-5, 4-4 PBC) consecutive home losses for the first time in nearly two seasons, while the Braves have now dropped consecutive series for the first time in two years as well. The triumph was the eighth win in the last nine outings for Montevallo (10-9, 6-3) who now boasts series victories over the Braves and Francis Marion.
The Braves got 2-for-4 outings from newcomers Jordan Edgerton and Victor Zecca, but stranded eight on the base paths, including five in scoring position. Leadoff hitter Zack Willoughby finished a double short of hitting for the cycle, but still finished the day with a 3-for-4 outing with a pair of RBI to pace the Falcons. Heath Peterson, Blaine Rosenberg and Andrew Hill each booked a pair of hits for the visitors as well.
UNCP starter Alex Pearce (2-2) struck out four, but yielded five earned runs on 10 hits and a quintet of walks to take the loss for the hosts. Heiser, who lugged an ERA hovering near 10.00 heading into the weekend, scattered eight hits, four strikeouts and a pair of earned runs over eight innings from the hill to grab the win for the Falcons, while Wes Rich struck out two in a scoreless ninth to notch his second save of the season.
Willoughby's wind-aided solo homer gave Montevallo a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but UNCP countered in the bottom of the frame, tying the game back up on a RBI single from Josh Haley. The Falcons would inevitably put the game away in the fourth, however, scoring three runs off of three hits and four walks to lug a 4-1 lead into the fifth.
Vinny Rodriguez tacked on an insurance run with his RBI single in the fifth, while J.J. Williams capped the scoring on the day for UNCP with a RBI single in the eighth.
The Braves will open up a four-game road trip on Wednesday when they make the short trek up U.S. 74 to battle region rival Wingate (10-11) in a 6 p.m. contest at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field.
