Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. – The UNCP softball team was overrun by No. 5 Valdosta State in the second game of the doubleheader, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon as the Blazers captured the series sweep of the Lady Braves at VSU Softball Complex.
UNCP (10-13) collected five hits as Kaytee Wilson led the way with two, while Kristen Hobbs, Megan Hillard and Kellie Van Dyke each notched one apiece. Valdosta State (11-2) scored five runs off nine hits as Courtney Albritton went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Starr Gilley (4-6) went four innings and suffered the loss as she allowed all five runs (four earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts. Senior Jamie Burwell relieved Gilley and went 1-2/3 innings, before Natalie Klemann recorded the final out. Abigayle Kohler (1-0) pitched her first complete game of the season and registered two walks, five hits and two strikeouts.
With two runs scored in the second and third innings, the Blazers added another three runs in the fourth inning to put the game away as Albritton homered to bring in the runners on base. UNCP posted a run in four of the seven innings, but was unable to produce a run as six batters were left on base at the conclusion of the game.
The Lady Braves will open up Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday when the squad hosts Augusta State (13-5) in a doubleheader at LRA Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
