Braves Too Much For Visiting Pfeiffer

Box Score

PEMBROKETyler Potter and Aaron Parnell both hit two-run home runs to fuel a 16-hit attack for UNCP and the 25th-ranked Braves scored early and often in flying past visiting Pfeiffer, 12-1, on Thursday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The rout helped the Braves (29-15) stretch their series winning streak out to five games, while also giving the Black & Gold its 22nd home win of the season. Pfeiffer (22-23), who knocked off then-No. 4 Mount Olive on Saturday, lost for the fifth time in its last six outings.

UNCP got multi-hit efforts from five different players on the night, including three-hit performances from both J.J. Williams (3-for-4, 3 R) and Chad Whitehead (3-for-5, 3 RBI). Parnell drove in three runs and scored three times to highlight a 2-for-4 night, with Potter plating a trio of runs on a 2-for-4 performance. Drew Alford walked and scored twice on a 2-for-3 hitting line as well. Five different players recorded base hits for the Falcons.

Brantley Hattrich (5-2) struck out four and scattered three hits in three innings of work to grab the win in a pre-determined pitching rotation, with five UNCP relievers seeing action in the outing as well. Pfeiffer starter Michael Crespo (0-2) saddled the loss for the visitors despite yielding just one earned run on two hits and a trio of walks.

Potter gave UNCP the early lead with a RBI single in the first, but the Braves exploded for four runs in the third and two more in the sixth to fuel the rout. Pfeiffer spoiled the shutout with an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but UNCP responded with four more runs in the bottom of the frame to provide the final.

The Braves will put the lid on the road portion of their 2012 schedule this weekend when it heads to Savannah, Ga., for a key Peach Belt Conference series against league-leading and fifth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic (32-9, 16-8 PBC) at Pirate Field. The squads will open up the three-game set with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, and close out the weekend with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
