Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. – Visiting UNCP rallied for a trio of runs in the top of the third inning and got a shut-down performance from its bullpen en route to salvaging its weekend series at No. 14 Francis Marion with a 5-2 win over the Patriots on Monday at Cormell Field.
The win snapped a seven-game series losing streak for UNCP (24-10, 11-9 PBC), who grabbed its first win over the Patriots since a 9-6 triumph in Pembroke on April 17, 2010. It was the first win for the Braves in Florence since Feb. 22, 2009. The setback stopped a five-game winning streak for the Patriots (24-12, 12-8) as well.
Josh Haley doubled, homered, stole a trio of bases and scored twice on a 2-for-4 outing to pace the Braves, who also got a 3-for-4 hitting line from Tyler Potter. The Patriots got a trio of hits from Tyler Hibbs (3-for-4), as well as a 2-for-4 day from Tyler Boyd.
Alex Pearce (5-3) picked up his third-straight win with 5-2/3 effective innings of work from the hill in which he offset 10 hits and a pair of earned runs with four strikeouts. Reliever Patrick McMahon turned in 1-1/3 hitless innings from the hill, while Braxton Lewis booked his 10th save of the campaign with two hitless innings of work. Spencer Jordan (5-3) saddled the loss for Francis Marion despite yielding just four hits and for runs (two earned). He also struck out seven.
After trading runs with the hosts in the first inning, UNCP used two hits, including RBI doubles by both Aaron Parnell and Potter, and a pair of FMU errors to plate a trio of runs and take the lead for good. The Patriots cut into their deficit with a lone run in the fourth, but the Braves plated an insurance run in the ninth off another miscue by the Patriot defense.
McMahon and Lewis combined to retire the final 10 Francis Marion batters of the contest.
UNCP will be back in action again on Tuesday when the Braves open up a four-game home stand against St. Augustine's (14-25). First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at Sammy Cox Field.
