Box Score MOUNT OLIVE – Junior Martin Tomter delivered the UNCP men's soccer team the first victory of the season against region rival Mount Olive, 3-0, after scoring within the first seven minutes of the game on Thursday evening at Amon Field.
Tomter sent the ball flying into the back-left corner of the net after winning the duel inside the box, which put UNCP (1-0-0) ahead for the remained of the game. Senior captain Sean Hoek knocked in the final two goals of the game. Hoek scored off a header from the front of the goal in the 32nd minute on the assist from senior Michael Smith sending the Braves into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
With less than 12 minutes into the second half, Hoek capitalized on the open midfield and scored on a clear shot into the back of the net to give UNCP a final 3-0 win over Mount Olive (0-1-0).
The Black and Gold outshot the Trojans by five shots with Hoek posting four shots and sophomore Sam Miles registering three. Five other Braves recorded one shot apiece. Sophomore Ryan Hanson clipped a perfect 90 minutes in goal as he notched four saves for the shutout.
UNCP proved aggressive on the field as the team attached the goal with eight shots in the first half compared to Mount Olive's two shots. The Black and Gold also tallied five more fouls than the Trojans.
Mount Olive registered two shots each from Danny Stirland and Joe Dashiell as they saw action as a reserve, while three starters each collected one shot. Nick Bernsdorf clipped three saves and allowed all three goals in his 90 minutes of action in goal.
The Braves will return home on September 1 to host region opponent Anderson (S.C.) in the first home match of the 2012 season at 7 p.m. at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2012 home soccer matches is free.
