Box Score PEMBROKE – With only one goal scored by senior captain Sean Hoek, the UNCP men's soccer team continued its undefeated record this season as the Braves clinched the 1-0 win over region opponent No. 24 Anderson (S.C.) on Saturday evening at Varsity Grounds.
The Braves (2-0-0) quickly set the pace for the game in the opening minutes as Hoek headed the ball on the left side within close range at the 5:49 mark for his third goal of the season. The play began with a corner kick by Michael Smith on the right side and was served into the box by Payne Clark for the assist.
A physical and fast paced game was played from start to finish as UNCP and Anderson (0-1-0) combined for 21 fouls, four yellow cards and 10 offsides. "The first half I wasn't very happy. We made hard work of small things, but the second half was an outstanding effort from everyone," said head coach Phil Hindson.
The defensive effort of the backfield produced a silent impact on the game as the Braves denied the Trojans the opportunity to tie. Goalkeeper Ryan Hanson notched three saves in his 90 minutes of action, while the team managed two saves.
Trojans totaled only 10 shots during the game while the Black and Gold double the shots with 20. Sophomore Sam Miles led the team with six shots, while Hoek collected five, four of which were on goal.
Anderson's net minder Lukas Hesse halted the offensive effort of the Braves as he finished the game with 11 saves including eight in the second half.
The Braves will return to action on September 4 when the squad plays host to region rival Wingate (2-0-0) in a 7 p.m. matchup at Varsity Grounds.
