PEMBROKE – The UNCP women's volleyball team picked up its fourth shutout of the 2012 campaign as they put away Coker in three straight sets, 25-21, 25-23, 25-15, Wednesday night in Pembroke.
Junior Marissa Baker served three straight aces early in the third set to establish the tone for the Lady Braves (5-4) as they took down the Cobras (0-9) with ease. Baker had a team-high 11 kills for the Black and Gold with a .346 hitting percentage.
UNCP played with a solid defense that caused Coker to struggle at the net, as the Cobras obtained only a .096 hitting percentage through three sets. "Our girls played really well tonight. We struggled on defense this past weekend so we focused on that all week and executed that tonight," said UNCP head coach Angie Byrd.
Jennifer Grunden and Ashtin Truesdale led the team with 13 digs apiece, while senior Ashlyn Rebok notched 31 assists, bringing her season total to 223 assists.
Coker was led by Taylor Willis who posted 10 kills and two services aces. Samantha Celek dished out 29 assists for the Cobras.
The Lady Braves are back on the road as they travel to Jefferson City, Tenn., for the Eagle Invitational this weekend. UNCP will face off against Palm Beach Atlantic (8-2) in its first match Friday at 7 p.m.
