Fayetteville – Freshman Ashtin Truesdale led the UNCP offense with eight kills, but Fayetteville State overwhelmed the Lady Braves on offense and defense, as the Broncos took the 3-0 victory Tuesday evening at the Capel Arena.
The Lady Braves (5-8) were unable to respond to a powerful Fayetteville State (6-0) net presence as the Broncos won in three straight sets 25-20, 21-25, and 25-17. The Broncos collected nine team blocks and 41 kills registering a .329 hitting percentage. Truesdale and Ashlyn Rebok posted two service aces apiece to lead the Lady Braves. Ifeyinwa Nwokolo led the Broncos slamming 12 kills and earning a .647 hitting percentage.
In the first set the Lady Braves took a 10-6 lead over the Broncos on a five point serving run from Ashlyn Rebok. The Broncos rallied back with help from five kills from Joylene Thompson. Marissa Baker and Shay Peterson each notched three kills apiece for the Black and Gold.
Fayetteville State controlled the momentum in the second and third sets as the Lady Braves were never able to take a commanding lead over the Broncos. Despite cutting the deficit to only two points in the second set, making the score 18-16, the Lady Braves could not find an answer to Fayetteville State's explosive offense.
The Broncos had 14 kills to UNCP's seven in the third set and jumped out to an early 10-4 lead over the Lady Braves. Shavon Shaw boasted three straight kills as the Broncos went on a 12-5 run to close out the set.
The Lady Braves will match up against Peach Belt Conference foe Francis Marion (7-2, 0-0 PBC) in Florence, S.C., on Saturday at 2 p.m., in the Smith University Center.
