Lady Braves Fall To Nationally Ranked Armstrong

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Freshman Rae-Shawna Campbell posted two goals as the UNCP women's soccer team fell to No. 9 Armstrong Atlantic, 4-2, in a Peach Belt Conference battle in Pembroke Wednesday evening.

The Lady Braves (4-3-1, 1-2-0 PBC) were outshot by Armstrong (5-1-1, 3-0-0) 21-11 as the Pirates picked up their fifth straight win. Campbell fueled the offensive effort for the Black and Gold scoring UNCP's only two goals of the night. The two goals were the first given up by Armstrong in six matches and snapped the Pirates' scoreless streak of 548:48 minutes. Morgan Mitchell scored the game-winning goal for Armstrong as she picked up her eighth score of the season.

The Pirates notched the game-winning goal within the first minute of the second half as Mitchell beat UNCP keeper Britney Bennett on a loose ball. The Lady Braves fought back as Andrea Collèn and Amalia Arvidsson assisted Campbell as she headed the ball from close range to score. Armstrong would score again with 22 seconds as Nadima Skeff found the back of the net on a one versus one with Bennett.

UNCP scored first and jumped ahead of the Armstrong in the first half as Campbell scored in the 27th minute on a pass from Arvidsson. The Pirates answered as Danielle Fey lit the spark on the Armstrong offense finding the right side of the goal on a pass from Taylor Valley. Five minutes later Fey would connect with Taylor Russell on a corner kick as Russell headed the ball into the net.

"Armstrong Atlantic is a team with tremendous resources, a great coaching staff and good players. They're a class act and I take nothing away from them. But I think we gave them a run for their money," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "Putting two in against Armstrong is very positive and that's something build on. We've got to keep believing and make sure they become the team that is a force to be reckoned with in the PBC tournament."

The Lady Braves will be back in action as they travel to St. Augustine, Fla., on Saturday to battle PBC rival Flagler (7-1-1, 2-1-0) at 5 p.m. at Saints Field.
