Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The UNCP women's soccer team scored two goals quick in the first half to outlast Peach Belt Conference rival Flagler on Saturday at Saints Field.
Although the Saints (7-2-1, 2-2-0 PBC) outshot UNCP (5-3-1, 2-3-0), 17-14, including 9-6 shots on goal, the Lady Braves were able to find the back of the net twice as Amalia Arvidsson and Fanny Forsman posted one goal apiece for the Black and Gold. Arvidsson and Julia Nytorp had a team-best four shots apiece, while the Saints were led by Cassie Fernandez who took four shots. The Lady Braves played aggressive in the match picking up 17 fouls to Flagler's six.
"The first half we played really well, obviously it resulted in two goals. The second half we committed a classic mistake of riding a 2-nill lead, which is the most dangerous lead in a soccer game," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We played with a false sense of comfort for the first 30 minutes. In the end we weathered the storm and it was a total team effort that allowed us the advantage."
The Saints pounded 11 shots at UNCP keeper Britney Bennett in the second half but were not able to get the ball between the pipes. Bennett tallied six saves and the Lady Braves added three team saves. Flagler goalkeeper, Cristina Coca, notched four saves for the Saints in the net.
Arvidsson scored early, collecting her sixth goal of the season in the 18th minute on a pass from Andrea Collèn. Arvidsson leads the Lady Braves in goals scored and game winning goals with four, while Collèn holds a team-best six assists. A little over 10 minutes later Fanny Forsman added another goal for UNCP off of a deflection. The goal marks Forsman's second of the 2012 campaign.
"It was an important win for that will hopefully start a little surge. We are very pleased, it wasn't the prettiest, but we'll take it," said Andersson following the triumph over Flagler.
The Lady Braves will be back in action again on Wednesday when they travel to Greenwood, S.C., for a 4:30 p.m. PBC tilt with Lander (6-1-2, 4-0-0).
