Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – Newcomer James Casserly notched two goals and one assist in the 6-0 shutout victory over Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia Southwestern in the conference opener at GSW Soccer Field on Friday afternoon in Americus, Ga.
Casserly put the Braves (4-0-0, 1-0-0 PBC) ahead from the 10:59 mark in the first half as he punched the ball into the net on the long throw by Payne Clark to clinch the game-winning goal. Less than four minutes later, sophomore Sam Miles notched the second goal of the game on the assist by Casserly and Sean Hoek after the ball was deflected by the goalkeeper.
The ball was shot from the near right post by Casserly to tally his second goal of the game on the assist by Clark less than 1:30 after Miles's first goal. At the 18:08 mark, Miles again attached the goal to bring the score to 4-0 as he was served the ball in front of the goal and sprinted into the box for the score.
Junior Brett Luccia brought the score to 5-0 before half time on a penalty kick at the 36:43 mark.
Coming out of the half, Martin Tomter headed the ball on a rebound in the box to score on an open goal to deliver the Braves the final 6-0 victory.
Junior Ryan Hanson split equal time in goal with sophomore Joe Cullip as Hanson notched one save. Georgia Southwestern (0-2-1, 0-1-0) began with Cade Jones in goal who allowed the first four goals in his 34:13 of action before being relieved in Garrett Blamire. Blamire spent 31:11 in goal and allowed the final two goals, but managed three saves. Finally, Ryan Tucker ended the game between the posts for the Hurricanes as he registered two saves.
The Black and Gold combined for 18 shots, 12 of which were on goal, while GSW only managed four shots, three of which came in the second half. Michael Corrigan and Alex Babiolakis each had two shots for the Hurricanes while, Casserly led the Braves with three.
The Braves will continue on the road as the squad battles region foe Chowan (0-3-0) in a 5 p.m. matchup on Wednesday at the Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro.
