Hurricanes Snap UNCP's 11-Game Home Win Streak

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Georgia Southwestern held UNCP to a season-low 29 percent effort from the field and used a 13-4 run right before the halftime break to effectively snap an 11-game home win streak for the Braves with a 65-58 victory on Sunday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.

The setback marked the first home loss for the Braves (10-6, 3-3 PBC) since they fell by a 64-60 result to Georgia College on Jan. 22, 2012. The triumph helped Georgia Southwestern (7-6, 3-3) snap a four-game losing skid, with the Hurricanes also breaking a two-game series losing streak as well.

K.J. Cooper and Quamain Rose each tallied 15 points to lead UNCP, while sophomore Ben Jacobs came off the bench to add 10 points of his own on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Rose also added a trio of steals, two assists and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds as well. Jamon Hawkins and Alan Arnett each registered 18 points to lead the Hurricanes.

Despite the loss, the Braves out-rebounded their opponent for the 12th-straight time, as well as the 14th time this season, to maintain their mojo on the inside. UNCP's field goal percentage, which was marred by a 26.5 percent performance in the first half, is the lowest shooting percentage for the squad since it canned just 11-of-48 (.229) attempts in a 61-39 loss at Georgia Southwestern on Jan. 16, 2011.

"We got out-worked and out-toughed. It wasn't just the players, but the coach as well," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "When you get out-worked like that, you don't deserve to win. Every night is going to be a battle in the Peach Belt Conference. I don't know that we have figured that out yet. When shots aren't falling, you need to find another way to get it done. They found a way, and we didn't."

The visitors had extended a slight halftime edge out to eight points midway through the second half and led by as many as 10 points, 48-38, with 7:18 left to play, but UNCP climbed to within six points less than four minutes later and threatened to make it a nailbiter down the stretch. It would be the closest the Braves would get.

The Braves jumped out to an 11-2 lead just less than four minutes into the game, but the Hurricanes answered with eight-straight points to nearly pull even at the 11:18 mark. The Braves pushed their lead back out to seven points, 17-10, with 8:31 left before the intermission, but Matt Shaw's layup seconds later sparked the visitors on a key 13-4 run over the next five minutes that would, eventually, give the Hurricanes a 28-26 lead heading into the locker rooms.

UNCP will open up a four-game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Greenwood, S.C., to lock horns with PBC East rival Lander (6-7, 105) in Horne Arena. Tip off has been slated for 7:30 p.m.
