Box Score PEMBROKE – The UNCP women's basketball team made two consecutive layups in the final 23 seconds of action to edge Georgia Southwestern, 64-61, in a Peach Belt Conference clash Sunday afternoon at the English E. Jones Center.
The Lady Braves (8-7, 2-4) have won two straight against the Lady Hurricanes (3-10, 1-5). UNCP continues to dominate the all-time series, improving to 9-1 with GSW. The Lady Hurricanes have now dropped two consecutive PBC matchups on the season.
Jazmine Kemp recorded her second double-double of the season, totaling 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wayne Mack came off of the bench to lead the Lady Braves in scoring, finishing with 13 points, tying her career best. Mack also contributed a team-high three steals and one block. The Lady Braves used 21 defensive rebounds to create 20 second chance points, as well as scoring 14 points off of 15 GSW turnovers.
The Lady Hurricanes were led by Kayla Dayton with 16 points, while Jasmine McSwain and Shaniece Sheffield each scored in double-digits, with 13 and 12 points, respectively. GSW was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line and connected on 10-of-25 (40.0%) 3 point buckets.
"I thought we did a good job on the boards and got a couple of big defensive rebounds. We did a good job rebounding the basketball," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "I don't think our defense is that bad, I think a lot of their shots were contested shots. We gave them a few open looks, as we did with Columbus State yesterday. I thought our defense tonight with the 3 point shot was pretty good for the most part, they just made a lot of contested shots."
The second half was a back-and-forth battle that saw five lead changes and four ties. Coming back from the half the score was tied at 33, but the Lady Canes would soon jump ahead to grab a six point advantage at 43-37. A jump shot from Taylor Gallentine tied the score up at 48 before a bucket from Kemp gave UNCP a two point lead. The Lady Canes took the lead, 57-51, after a trey from Danisha Green, but six consecutive made free throws would once again tie the game up at 57-57. Chandrica Fuller drained a layup with 30 seconds remaining to give the Lady Braves a one-point edge, followed by another layup from Mack to put the game away at 64-61.
The Lady Braves led by as much as 11 in the first half, as Kierra Haney gave UNCP a 16-5 lead before the midway point of the first half. GSW produced a mild scoring surge, but back-to-back triples from Kamille Horne put the Lady Braves back on top by 11. The Lady Hurricanes fought from behind the entire first half, but a 3 point bucket from Dayton with just 30 seconds remaining tied the score up at 33-33 going into halftime.
Next up for the Black and Gold is a PBC battle in Greenwood, S.C., with Lander (5-8, 2-4) which starts a four-game road trip for the squad. Tip is set for 5:30 at the Finis Horne Arena.
