Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. – Freshman Quamain Rose scored seven of his team-high 19 points in the overtime periods, including a pair of momentum-changing 3-pointers in the second overtime, to lead UNCP to its first road win of the season with a 79-73 victory at Lander on Wednesday evening.
The triumph marked the 10th victory in the last 13 outings for UNCP (11-5, 4-3 PBC) who also snapped a six-game road losing streak in the process as well. The loss was the fifth-straight for Lander (6-8, 1-6) who fell to 16-5 all-time against the Braves at home. The Braves have now won seven of the last eight in the series as well.
Senior George Blakeney became the 29th member of UNCP's 1,000-point club with a 16-point, 9-rebound outing against the Bearcats, while Rose offset seven turnovers with 7-of-14 shooting from the field and finished the night with a trio of assists as well. Griffin Pittman and K.J. Cooper each added 11 points for the visitors.
Lander got a game-best 23 points from Jareal Smith on 10-of-26 shooting from the field, while David Pruett registered 19 points and Scott Elder added 11. The Bearcats finished the night and kept themselves in the game on a 9-of-21 success rate from the perimeter.
Entering the game as the nation's sixth-best rebounding team, the Braves out-rebounded its opponent for the 13th-straight time and the 14th time this year by finishing the night with a 42-30 disparity on the glass.
The Braves hit all three of their shots from the perimeter in the second overtime period, but none bigger than Cooper's trey from the top of the key with 17 seconds remaining that gave the visitors a 77-73 advantage. Rose had already hit two earlier in the period, including one that he banked off the glass with two defenders in his face.
The visitors had their chances to win the game in the first overtime period, but the Bearcats scored five-straight points in the first overtime to grab a slight lead with 1:04 remaining. The Braves tied the score on the other end with a short jumper by Ben Jacobs, but Smith missed a contested shot with two seconds left on the ensuing possession that kept the game locked up.
UNCP pushed a 26-24 halftime lead out to double digits just less than four minutes into the second half, but the Bearcats engineered a 12-2 run midway through the period to whittle its deficit back to two points, 45-43, on Smith's 3-pointer with 8:23 left. Leading by five points with 91 seconds left, the Braves missed five of their six free throws down the stretch and, eventually, the hosts tied the score on a 19-foot fall-away buzzer-beater by Pruett.
Lander set the tone early by scoring seven of the game's first nine points to grab the early momentum, but Blakeney scored his 1,000th point - and capped an 18-3 run for the Braves - with a layup at the 5:21 mark that gave the visitors a 20-10 advantage. Lander stormed back, however, and closed out the opening stanza with a 12-4 run that trimmed its deficit down to a single possession, 24-22, heading into the locker rooms.
UNCP will continue its four-game conference road trip on Saturday when the Braves head to Morrow, Ga., for a PBC intra-divisional battle against Clayton State (7-6, 3-3). Tip off has been slated for 3:30 p.m. inside CSU's Athletics & Fitness Center.
