Tale Of Two Halves As Braves Fall At Montevallo

Box Score

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo shot 68 percent from the perimeter, including an eye-popping 7-of-9 success rate in the latter stanza, and took advantage of a 10-minute field goal drought by UNCP in the second half en route to an 84-61 win over the Braves on Monday evening in BankTrust Arena.

The loss snapped a two-game road win streak for UNCP (12-7, 5-4 PBC) and kept the Braves winless in six meetings all-time with the Falcons. The triumph was the third-straight victory for Montevallo (11-5, 7-2) who has now won eight of its last 10 outings since dropping consecutive games in early December.

George Blakeney scored a team-best 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting to pace the Braves who also got 11 points from redshirt freshman Quamain Rose. Troran Brown shot 6-for-8 from the perimeter alone en route to a game-best 26 points for Montevallo, while Ryan May and Mark Fitzgerald both added 19 points apiece.

The 13 3-pointers were a season-high for Montevallo and the most for the Falcons since they tallied a 14-of-35 performance from downtown against Carver Bible on Dec. 9, 2009. UNCP, who had out-rebounded 14-straight opponents heading into Monday, was outdone in the rebounding column by a 30-23 margin.

Blakeney threw down a dunk to give the visitors a 46-43 edge with 18:16 left in the game, but the Braves missed their next nine shots and turned the ball over six times over the next 10 minutes of the game to allow the Falcons to take complete control. Fitzgerald's layup at the 18:00 mark sparked Montevallo on a 27-5 run over that same 10-minute stretch that gave the hosts a 70-51 lead with 6:46 left to play. UM was a perfect 4-for-4 from the perimeter amid the decisive run.

Both teams shot better than 60 percent from the field in the opening half, but neither were able to gain much separation. Montevallo took its biggest lead of the half, 20-15, on a jump shot by Brown at the 12:28 mark, but the Braves followed with an 8-3 run to tie the game three minutes later. The Black & Gold took its biggest lead of the half, 42-38, on a layup by Blakeney with 48 seconds left before the break, but Brown hit a 3-pointer on the other end of the court to make it a one-point game heading into the locker rooms.

UNCP will close out its season-long four-game road trip on Saturday when the Braves head to Augusta, Ga., to battle PBC East rival Augusta State (8-5, 4-3) in the back half of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader inside Christenberry Fieldhouse.
