Braves Complete 3-1 Road Trip With Win At Augusta State

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Visiting UNCP put together an 11-2 run midway through the first half and then held off a last-gasp charge by Augusta State as the Braves snapped an 11-game losing streak on the road in the series with a 65-61 victory over the Jaguars on Saturday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The triumph put the caps on a 3-1 road trip for the Braves (13-7, 6-4 PBC) who grabbed their first win in Augusta, Ga., since Feb. 6, 2002. Augusta State (10-6, 5-4), in addition to their third-straight loss in the series with the Black & Gold, has now dropped three of its last five league outings since a 70-64 loss to the Braves earlier this month.

George Blakeney scored a team-best 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to register his eighth double-double performance of the season, while frontcourt mate Ben Jacobs tallied a season-best 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting for the Braves as well. The Jaguars got a game-high 21 points from Ryan Weems and 16 more from Devon Wright-Nelson.

The Braves, who out-rebounded (38-31) their opponent for the 17th time this season, posted a 20-2 advantage on second chance points, as well as a 30-10 advantage in bench scoring.

Weems tied the score at 41 apiece on a fast-break layup with 14:32 to play but, after trading baskets with the hosts for the next four minutes, Quamain Rose's 3-pointer at the 10:22 mark sparked the Braves on a game-changing 11-2 run that opened up a double-digit lead, 58-47, for the visitors after a pair of free throws from Griffin Pittman at the 6:22 mark.

The Jaguars whittled their deficit down to two, 60-58, with 3:19 to play, but missed their next five shots from the field in allowing the visitors to push their advantage back to six, 65-59, with seven seconds remaining. Wright-Nelson's buzzer-beating layup would provide the final.

UNCP scored 14 of the game's first 16 points to set the tempo early, but faltered shortly thereafter. Leading 20-9 with just less than 11 minutes left before the break, the Braves connected on just two of their next 14 shots (14 percent) and shot 3-for-9 from the charity stripe over the next nine minutes – a span that saw the Jaguars outscore the visitors 19-7.

Augusta State took its first lead of the contest on a pair of free throws by Michael Graham at the 1:36 mark, but UNCP got a huge 3-pointer from Shahmel Brackett, as well as a buzzer beater from Jacobs, to lug a 32-30 advantage into the locker rooms.

The Braves will open up a short two-game home stand on Saturday when they lace up to battle PBC East rival Armstrong Atlantic (10-6, 6-3) in the second half of a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader in the English E. Jones Center.
