Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State held the UNCP women's basketball team to just 10 points in the first half en route to capturing a 57-40 Peach Belt Conference victory over the Lady Braves on Saturday Evening at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The triumph gave the Lady Jags (14-2, 7-2 PBC) their sixth-consecutive victory. UNCP (9-10, 3-7) and Augusta State have split the regular season series, each taking the win on its home court. The Lady Jaguars improve to 28-15 in the all-time series with the Lady Braves.
Kamille Horne came off of the bench to lead the Black and Gold, totaling a team-high 12 points. Jazmine Kemp added nine points for the Lady Braves, while Amelia Partin and Kierra Haney contributed six points apiece. Taylor Gallentine controlled the defense, grabbing a team-best 10 boards.
Augusta State got double-digit scoring from Tiffany Jaecks and Laci Schreiber, who scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Schrieber rounded out the night with 13 boards to earn a double-double.
Neither squad shot more than 35 percent, with the Lady Braves besting Augusta State from 3-point territory. UNCP connected on 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from downtown, including four treys from Horne. Turnovers hurt the Lady Braves, allowing the Lady Jags to score 15 points off of 16 UNCP turnovers.
"I think the offense played poorly, especially in the first half. We weren't aggressive and turned the ball over. We just didn't make shots. Our defense wasn't horrible, and when we finally started attacking and making shots, it was too little too late. It's a disappointing loss, but we have a week to get ready for Armstrong," said UNCP head coach John Haskins.
The Lady Jags came out of the intermission with a 13-point advantage and did not let up in the final 20 minutes. Augusta State took its biggest lead at 41-18 midway through the half after Eryka Menzies made good on a 3-point play. UNCP scored six straight to bring the deficit back to 13, 51-38, but, with two minutes remaining, the Lady Jags drained three consecutive buckets to take the 57-40 victory.
UNCP was just 4-of-25 (16 percent) from the floor as the Lady Jags took control early, taking an 8-0 lead five minutes into the game. A bucket from Haney would bring the Lady Braves within three, 13-10, with under 10 minutes in the first half, but the Black and Gold would not score again in the half. Augusta State closed out the first half scoring 10 unanswered points.
After a four-game road stint, the UNCP women's basketball team will come back home to Pembroke on February 2 when the Lady Braves host PBC rival Armstrong Atlantic (7-9, 2-7) in the English E. Jones center at 1:30 p.m. in the front half of a basketball doubleheader.
