Braves Fall At Georgia College In Thriller

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Scott Ferguson's old-fashioned 3-point play with five seconds left gave Georgia College the game's final lead and the Bobcats benefitted from an unforced turnover on the other end of the court en route to a 63-61 win over visiting UNCP on Thursday evening in the Centennial Center.

The setback marked just the second loss in the last nine outings for UNCP (8-5, 1-2 PBC) who fell to 0-3 in true road contests this season. Georgia College (6-4, 2-1) won for the 26th time in the last 28 meetings with the Braves, including 13-straight wins over UNCP in Milledgeville.

Redshirt freshman Brandon Winford scored a team-best 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Braves, who also got a dozen points from Shahmel Brackett and 10 more from Griffin Pittman. Ferguson registered a game-best 28 points for the Bobcats, while Nate Hamilton chipped in 12 of his own.

UNCP, the nation's seventh-best team in terms of rebounding margin, owned the boards (39-31) for the ninth-straight game and the 11th time this season, and scored 17 of its points on second chance buckets. Georgia College canned twice as many (6) 3-pointers as the visitors in the contest and benefitted greatly from an 11-of-15 success rate from the charity stripe.

The Bobcats scored nine-straight points midway through the second half to take their biggest lead of the game, 56-50, on Ferguson's 3-pointer with 6:43 remaining, but UNCP answered with a 9-2 run a minute later to eventually take a 61-60 advantage on Brackett's layup with 94 seconds left. Aaron Robinson missed an easy layup with nine seconds left, but got the benefit of a scuffle on the floor for the loose rebound, as well as a timely time out by the bench. Ferguson's fall away shot four seconds later hit nothing but net and the senior followed with the bonus free throw to provide the final.

The Braves scored 17 points off of nine turnovers by the hosts in the opening half and scored the last nine points of the stanza to take a 32-28 advantage into the break. Georgia College had used an 11-4 run over a three-minute span to take a 28-23 advantage following three free throws by Hamilton at the 4:23 mark before the scoring spurt by the visitors.

UNCP will open up a three-game home stand on Saturday when the Braves suit up to entertain 12th-ranked and PBC East-leading Augusta State (7-2, 3-0) in the back half of a 5:30 p.m. basketball doubleheader in the English E. Jones Center.
