Effective Arc Shooting Pushes Georgia College Past UNCP, 55-41

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Lady Bobcats connected on 10-of-28 3-pointers throughout the 40 minutes of action to capture the 55-41 victory over the UNCP women's basketball team on Thursday evening in Peach Belt Conference action.

Despite staying neck-and-neck with Georgia College (7-3, 3-0 PBC) in rebounding, turnovers and steals, the Lady Braves (6-6, 0-3) struggled on the offensive side of the ball as the team shot 30.4 percent from the field, notched on three 3-pointers shots (17.6 percent) and finished the game 4-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Kierra Haney led the squad with 13 points, while senior Amelia Partin added 11. Forward Jazmine Kemp pulled down 11 rebounds including eight defensive despite being held scoreless during the contest.

After more than 12 minutes into the first half, both teams combined for a mere nine points as the Lady Bobcats held a five-point lead, 7-2. The Lady Braves fought back to tie the game for the first time at the 4:59 mark as Jasmine Hairston connected on the layup and added an extra point for the 3-point play.

The Black and Gold exited halftime down by eight points, 26-18, but cut the deficit on Partin's only 3-pointer of the game. Georgia College extended the lead to 20 points in the second half on a 17-2 run within a span of seven minutes and held the Lady Braves to four points in the final 5:17 of action.

"We played poorly offensively and didn't make shots," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "It was a disappointing loss, but Georgia College play extremely well. We will now have to regroup and work on a few things to get ready for our next game."

UNCP registered 18 points in the paint compared to Georgia College's 12. The Lady Bobcats shot 37.3 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from the foul line. UNCP totaled one less turnover in spite of being out-rebounded by two.

Shanteona Keys led the offensive charge with a team-best 12 points, while Enisha Donley, Brandi McKinney and Krysta Lewis each added 10 points.

The Lady Braves make their way back to the English E. Jones Center on Saturday after a three-game road stint to host Augusta State (8-1, 2-1) in a PBC doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. Admission prices to all 2012-13 home basketball games are $5 for adults and $2 for children 18 years of age and younger. UNCP students are admitted free with a valid Braves Card.
