Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 22 Armstrong Atlantic put up goals with less than a minute remaining in each half en route to a two-nil Peach Belt Conference victory over the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon at Armstrong Soccer Field.
With less than 30 seconds on the clock before the intermission, Armstrong (4-1-2, 2-1-0 PBC) pushed the game-winning goal across. Rachel Hatch connected on the pass from Brianne Matarazzo to find the back of the net at the 44:38 minute mark.
"Considering the players that are out in this game, both of our leading goal scorers, I think we came out and executed an outstanding game plan," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We had a momentary lapse of concentration and gave up a late goal in the first half, but in the big scheme of things, given the circumstances, we did an excellent job."
The Lady Braves (4-4-0, 2-2-0) were paced by Amber Watkins with three shots, including one on goal, while Sara Lundberg was responsible for UNCP's only other shot of the match. Armstrong played with an aggressive offense, outshooting the Black and Gold by an 18-4 margin. The Pirates also won the advantage of the set piece, taking all eight of the match's corner kicks.
Armstrong used another last seconds goal in the second frame, adding another score as the game clock hit 89:11. Andye Dawson dished an assist to Taylor Valley, who was able to connect with the goal and solidify the Pirates' victory seconds before the final buzzer.
UNCP received a 90-minute performance between the posts from Britney Bennett. Despite allowing two goals, Bennett collected eight saves for the Black and Gold. Morgan Luckie earned her third shutout of the season as she completed a perfect 90:00 in the net for Armstrong.
The setback marked the seventh-straight time the Pirates have defeated the Black and Gold, as Armstrong improves to 10-0-2 in the all-time series.
"I'm obviously disappointed in the loss, but we have a tremendous amount of opportunity left this season. The key is we have got to get healthy. If we can just get healthy we have a team that is going to be very good towards the end of the season. I look forward to the challenges ahead," said Andersson.
After a three-game road swing the Lady Braves will return home to Pembroke on Saturday, as they host PBC foe Flagler (4-4-1, 1-1-1) at 5 p.m. in the front half of a soccer double header inside the friendly confines of Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2013 soccer matches is free.
