PEMBROKE – Junior Sam Miles led the onslaught on goal as he registered two scores and two assists, while three other UNC Pembroke men's soccer players logged a goal each and five added at least one assist to help the Braves record their sixth shutout victory of the season with a 5-0 rout of visiting Mount Olive in regional play on Monday evening at Varsity Grounds.
Defender Payne Clark started the scoring campaign for UNCP (7-5-1) with his second goal of the season coming at the 24:43 mark on the assist Miles for a shot from just inside the box into the top left corner. Less than six minutes later, Miles received a long pass from Reece Rooney and Kevin Vigebo to beat out Mount Olive's (2-13-0) netminder Aleksandar Drobac and put the Braves up 2-0.
Miles put the Black and Gold up by three with his second goal of the game and seventh on the season at the 38:14 mark for the final score before the half. Freshman Ricardo Chavez collected the assist with a pass to allow the New Zealand native a shot from the left side into the lower right corner of the net.
Coming out of the half, newcomer Branco Theis rebounded the ball inside Mount Olive territory and drilled the goal to the lower left corner on the assist by Ryan Nadeau and Miles at the 68:06 mark. No more than three minutes later, UNCP would claim its final score as junior Matt MacDougall scored his first goal of the season on the assists by Hayden Little and Chavez.
"It was good to get the win," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "We played well the last three, four, five games, but we just weren't getting the results so it was nice to get a win and a couple of goals and also get a number of people playing."
Senior Ryan Hanson held onto three saves during the contest for UNCP, while two different Trojans saw time between the pipes on the night, with Drobac grabbing three saves and giving up all five goals, while Nick Bernsdorf entered into the game for 11:56 in the second half.
The aggressive game brought about three yellow cards and a combined 32 fouls with the second half granting 23 fouls alone. The Black and Gold used a 17-2 shot discrepancy in the first half and refused to halt the attack as the squad added an additional 15 shots compared to the Trojan's five in the remaining 45 minutes.
Miles led the Braves with seven shots, while Theis and James Casserly had four, Nico Posada and Rooney posted three and seven others each tallied at least one shot. Hyago Matielo, Sean Lockett, Cody Suite, Louis Gorman, Ruben Gomez and John Sonnendecker all took shots for Mount Olive.
Nineteen different players recorded playing time on the night for the Braves, who managed a season-best 31 shots and seven corner kicks in the contest as well.
UNCP will return to the field on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Braves play host to Erskine (8-4-1) at Varsity Grounds in their final non-conference regular season contest. Admission to all 2013 home soccer games are free.
