Trojans Stun Women's Soccer With Second Half Goals

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Alex Wetherholt notched the game-winning goal in the 75th minute to deliver the visiting Mount Olive Trojans a 3-2 regional victory over the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.

With the win, Mount Olive (4-9-2) grabbed its first victory of the series between the two schools and snapped an eight game losing streak to the Lady Braves (6-8-1), while UNCP has not put a win up since defeating Tusculum on Oct. 14.

The Lady Braves received goals from sophomore Rae-Shawna Campbell and freshman Carolina Sanchez late in the first half, while Michelle Hernandez tallied the assist for both goals in the setback. Campbell logged her fifth goal of the season off a shot from the right side to inside the left post at the 39:36 mark, while Sanchez answered with her fourth goal of the season less than four minutes later as she dribbled around the keeper for an open shot to the corner.

Mount Olive used an aggressive offense in the second half, which resulted in three goals to produce the win. Carlee Bock opened the scoring for the Trojans in the 51st minute on a shot to the upper right corner from 30 yards away, putting Mount Olive down by one score.

Less than three minutes later, Damilia Brooks tied the score at 2-2 on the cross pass from Lauren Power to place the ball in the upper left corner of the net. Wetherholt added the final tally with just 15 minutes to go in the game, after a pass from Brooks deflected off a UNCP defender, Wetherholt tapped the ball into the bottom left corner.

UNCP goalkeeper Claire Tracy played the full 90 minutes between the posts and collected one save during the outing, while Mount Olive's Carolin Edenhofner earned three saves in her time in goal.

UNCP led the first half with nine shots compared to three from the Trojans, but the second half favored Mount Olive as the squad gathered eight shots while UNCP collected seven.

Mount Olive proved aggressive with 10 fouls, five in each half, as the Lady Braves totaled five throughout the contest.

UNCP will be back in action on Saturday to battle Young Harris (4-9-0, 1-6-0 PBC) in the second game of a Peach Belt Conference double header slated to begin at 3 p.m. in Young Harris, Ga., at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
