Flagler's Penalty Kick Plagues Men's Soccer, 1-0

Box Score

PEMBROKE -
Visiting Peach Belt Conference rival Flagler used a 52nd minute penalty kick by Zach Shanahan to log the game's only goal as the Saints seized the 1-0 victory over the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team in a rematch from the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Regional Tournament on Saturday evening at Varsity Grounds.

The setback kept the Braves (5-4-0, 2-3-0 PBC) winless in the all-time series with the Saints (4-33-2, 2-2-1) and gave the squad its third-straight loss of the season, while Flagler picked up its second-straight win.

Senior Ryan Hanson went 1-1 in saves on penalty kicks as he went diving for the saved 83rd minute shot by Jonny Cosgrove and finished the contest with a season-best 11 saves in his complete showing between the pipes. Flagler's goalkeeper Camp Bissell picked up two saves throughout the contest en route to recording his third shutout of the season.

"The loss is disappointing. The effort was there, but there wasn't enough quality," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "We are not producing enough quality to get results against the best teams in this league. Flagler played well, we worked hard but the quality just is not there at the moment."

The Braves and Saints played a scoreless and physical first half as the teams combined for 12 fouls and one UNCP yellow card. Flagler led in shots going into halftime with seven, while the Black and Gold had four.

The Braves collected the first two shots of the game and held Flagler silent for over 20 minutes, but the Saints posted seven straight shots in a 15 minute span as UNCP closed out the half with two additional attempts at scoring.

The second half proved to be more aggressive as the Braves added seven fouls, while the Flagler claimed eight and its own yellow card. The Black and Gold were outshot throughout the second half as the Saints tallied 15 shots compared to UNCP's five.

The Saints would find all the positives in the second half, however, as Shanahan got his team off the mark and the second stanza rolling with the penalty kick at the 51:17 mark. Junior Sam Miles and sophomore Rico Laitinen managed the only shots on goal for UNCP as Miles led the Braves and the game with six overall shots.

Shanahan commanded the Saints with five shots, four of which were on goal, while Cosgrove registered four and Stephen Pratt contributed three.

The Braves will look to regroup for Wednesday's evening contest against another PBC rival No. 5 Lander (6-0-1, 3-0-0) in the second game of the doubleheader scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Varsity Grounds.
