Women's Soccer Shutout By Columbus State In Final Regular Season Match

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke women's soccer team was held to just three shots in 90:00 minutes as home standing Columbus State clinched the regular season Peach Belt Conference championship by defeating the Lady Braves 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Walden Soccer Complex.

The Cougars (13-5-0, 9-2-0 PBC) extend their win streak over the Lady Braves (7-9-2, 4-5-2) to three-straight matches, and improve to 12-2-1 all-time against the Black and Gold.

"It was a disappointing loss for us, but we lost to a very talented Columbus State team. They're a great team and are extremely well coached, and we enjoy playing them each year," said UNCP assistant coach Pauline Privitera. "I thought our back four played outstanding, they played with heart and determination, and Claire did an excellent job in goal. Unfortunately it takes all 11 players to win and there was a lack of effort as a whole. We're going to regroup, fix our mistakes and look forward to first round of the PBC Tournament."

Shelby Rolling opened up the scoring in the 16th minute, as she drilled a shot into the right side of the net. Taylor Marks assisted Rolling in netting her third goal of the season to help put the Cougars up one-nil. The Columbus State defense prevented UNCP from taking any shots in the first half, while the Cougars fired off 14 shots and took four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

The second half opened with consecutive Columbus State corner kicks, followed by Savanna Stiles taking UNCP's only corner kick of the match in the 51st minute. Rae-Shawna Campbell created the Lady Braves' first scoring opportunity, but her shot on goal at the 51:55 mark was stopped by the Columbus State keeper.

Campbell tried again, taking another shot in the 64th minute that the Cougars were able to block. Amber Watkins took the Lady Braves' final shot of the match as the clock hit 71:57, but Columbus State's Maylyn Parson came up with another stop in goal.

With less than six minutes remaining in the match Chelsea Person added an insurance goal for the Cougars, tallying her seventh score of the season. Marks' earned her second assist of the afternoon when her pass found Shea Wilby who connected with Person, who then pushed the ball into the left side of the net.

Columbus State edged the Black and Gold, 10-3 in shots during the second frame, including a 8-1 second-half advantage in corner kicks.

Each squad picked up five fouls in the first half, while the Cougars totaled two second half fouls and UNCP tallied one second-half caution.

Between the pipes for the Black and Gold Claire Tracy turned in a complete 90:00 minutes and five saves. Parsons finished a perfect 90:00 minutes for her third shutout of the season.

The Lady Braves will await the announcement of the place and opponent for the first round of the PBC Tournament to be hosted on Tuesday at the site of the higher seed.
