PEMBROKE – Visiting St. Andrews shot nearly 65 percent from the field to grab a 10-point lead just eight minutes into the contest, but the unbeaten UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 39 of the game's next 47 points en route to a convincing 98-66 victory over the Knights on Tuesday evening in the English E. Jones Center.
The win kept the Braves (7-0) perfect through seven games – the best start for the program since reeling off a 9-0 mark to begin the 1999-00 campaign. The setback marked the sixth-straight setback for St. Andrews (1-5) who counted the game as an exhibition contest on its 2013-14 campaign.
Four players turned in double-figure scoring numbers for the hosts, including sophomores Alex Bradley and Quamain Rose who registered a game-best 21 points. Griffin Pittman chipped in 13 points for the Braves, while Ben Jacobs scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds in just 22 minutes from the floor.
Titus Gary came off the bench to tally a team-best 13 points for the Knights, while Aaron Smith added 11 for the visitors as well. The Knights fell to 17-49 all-time against the Braves with the loss.
"We had some good moments out there tonight," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "The guys shared the ball tonight and our defense got a little better as the game went on. There is something about these guys. They have a way of figuring things out as the game goes on, even when we start slow. That helps me relax a little more on the sideline."
UNCP pushed its lead to 30 points, 71-41, with 10:42 left to play, and led by as much as 35 points, 93-58, on Keysheen Hinton's lay-in with just less than two minutes left. The Knights got to within 23 points on Charles Bowen's tip-in at the 13:17 mark, but the Braves scored the next 10 points to all but put the game on ice.
Marko Zjacic's layup at the 12:33 mark in the opening stanza helped St. Andrews open up a 21-11 advantage, but UNCP closed the half on a 37-8 run to carry a 48-29 lead into the halftime break.
UNCP will be back in action again on December 9 when it continues a three-game home stand against Mid-Atlantic Christian (1-5). Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
