Monley Comes Up Big, Women's Basketball Downs St. Andrews

Box Score

LAURINBURG –
Making her return to Scotland Country, freshman Jonissa Monley earned her first collegiate double-double with career- and game-highs of 21 points and 17 rebounds to assist the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team in the 73-46 rout of the St. Andrews Knights on Tuesday evening in Laurinburg.

With the win, the Lady Braves (2-2) grabbed their second-consecutive victory, while the Knights (4-3) dropped their third loss in four games.

Monley led the charge for UNCP and was a threat down low with fellow forward Kierra Haney who was just one rebound shy of her own double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior Wayne Mack and freshman Jasmine Huntley each tallied 10 points for the Black and Gold with both collecting two 3-pointers apiece. Newcomer Avae' Hardy dished out a career-high six assists in the contest.

"I thought we rebounded really well and we ran the floor very well at times," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "The good thing was that we played a lot of players and we got our freshman a lot of playing time. Overall I thought it was a pretty good effort, it was a little sloppy at times, but I thought it was a pretty solid effort. "

UNCP suffered a mere nine turnovers throughout the 40 minutes of action as shot 38.6 percent from the field with Monley going 8-for-12 as well. The Black and Gold logged 22 second-chance points, while St. Andrews managed just eight as the Lady Braves registered 20 offensive rebounds compared to the Knights' 12.

The Lady Braves put up 28 points in the paint, never trailed St. Andrews and led by as much as 32 points with 12:07 remaining in the second half. UNCP opened the contest with a quick jumper by junior Jazmine Kemp with less than 10 seconds elapsed on the clock and held the Knights scoreless for nearly three minutes. Again the UNCP defense denied St. Andrews a chance to score as the Knights suffered a dry spell for more than three minutes stretching from the 12:26 mark to 8:41 left in the first half.

Not only did the Black and Gold out-rebounded St. Andrews 59-42, but the Lady Braves held St. Andrews to only 17 made shots from the field compared to UNCP's 27.

St. Andrews' Karin Law led with a team-high 10 points, while Kayal Johnson chipped in nine and six  rebounds.

The Lady Braves will return to the English E. Jones Center on December 10, following finals week, to take on Chowan (5-2) in a 5 p.m. contest in Pembroke.
