PEMBROKE
– The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team won its third-straight game on Tuesday, 78-64 over Chowan, with the help of 22 points from Kamille Horne and a double-double from Kierra Haney inside of the English E. Jones Center.

The UNCP (3-2) win snapped Chowan's (6-3) three-game winning streak. The Lady Braves have now won two-straight against the Hawks, and improve to 5-3 in the all-time series.

"It was a struggle in the first half and that's how the Chowan games are. They're difficult to score on, it's kind of a grind it out game, but I thought we got it going offensively in the second half. I thought our defense was okay, it wasn't great but it was solid, and we did a better job rebounding in the second half," said UNCP head coach John Haskins

Horne dominated the Lady Braves offensive output, pouring out 22 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Haney turned in 13 points and 14 rebounds to make up a double-double, while freshman Katelyn Mitchell recorded her first double-figures performance with 13 points for the Black and Gold.

"It was good to have Kamille back, she's coming off of an ankle injury and this is her first game playing. She it got it going, and Kamille is just like that. She starts making shots and she can make them in bunches and I thought she did a good job," said Haskins.

The Lady Braves shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field, including a 40 percent (8-of-20) shooting performance from 3-point territory. UNCP took advantage of Chowan's mistake, converting 18 turnovers into 36 points.

The Hawks finished with three players in double-digit scoring, including a team-high 14 points from Rachel Gostomski. Gostomski was active behind the arch, connecting on 4-of-11 (26 percent) attempts from downtown. Alisha Mobley and Courtni Williams contributed 11 points apiece to the losing effort, as Mobley finished with a double-double adding 11 boards.

UNCP struck first, after a jump shot from Haney scored the first points of the night, but Mobley answered back for the Hawks a few seconds later. The remainder of the half was a back-and-forth battle, neither team leading by more than five. At the 4:50 mark, Mitchell dropped a 3-pointer to tie the game at 22-22. With less than two minutes remaining in the half, Wayne Mack drilled a jumper, followed by another three from Mitchell, to give the Black and Gold a 31-27 advantage at the intermission.

Despite the Hawks' attempt to comeback in the second half, the Lady Braves were able to hang on to their lead throughout the final 20 minutes. The game remained close until a technical foul and a shooting foul by Chowan allowed Horne the opportunity to make good on five-consecutive free throws to put UNCP ahead, 58-50 with seven minutes to go. The Lady Braves controlled the pace the rest of the way, leading by as much as 16 after a layup from Avae' Hardy with 1:03 left before the final buzzer. RyJae Anderson came to the line for the Hawks with 23 seconds on the clock and drained both free throw attempts, but UNCP closed out the game with the 78-64 victory.

The Lady Braves return to the court on Saturday as the squad debuts in Peach Belt Conference action against USC Aiken at home in the Jones Center. Saturday's matchup is Robeson County Education day, where all students, faculty and staff from Robeson County Schools can receive $2 admission by showing their school identification card. Tip is slated for 1:30 p.m. in the front half of a UNCP basketball doubleheader.
