PEMBROKE – Five players recorded double-digit scoring efforts, including two with more than eight rebounds to help the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team maintain its undefeated record with a 90-67 triumph over visiting Mid-Atlantic Christian on Monday evening in the English E. Jones Center.
The win kept the Braves (8-0) perfect through eight games – the best start for the program since reeling off a 9-0 mark to begin the 1999-00 campaign. The setback snapped a two-game winning streak for Mid-Atlantic Christian (3-7) who recorded its seventh loss.
The Black and Gold got double-digit outings from four of its five starters, including Griffin Pittman with 17 points as he was 7-for-10 from the field, Quamain Rose with 14 points and Brandon Winford and Ben Jacobs with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while big man Chris Lindsay knocked down 12 points. Sophomore Tyler Kordenbrock pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds, while Winford claimed nine boards and Lindsay collected eight. Rose tallied a game-high seven assists and five steals during his 23 minutes on the court.
Daquan Holden scored a team-high 16 points for the Mustangs, who also got 14 points from Michael Anderson, while Perry Wood registered nine rebounds.
"The game plan was to go out and play hard on both sides of the ball – execute on offense and contain the dribble on defense," Pittman said. "It was a big game for us. We take every game as a big game when you are undefeated. You are going to get everyone's best effort and we feel like we played pretty good. We are going to go back and watch film. I'm sure we made some mistakes because no team is perfect, but it's a stepping stone to chase perfection and that is what we want to do."
UNCP, who out-rebounded the Mustangs by a 53-40 edge during the contest, collected 21 second-chance points, 29 points off the 21 Mid-Atlantic Christian turnovers and led by its largest lead of 30 points with 17:30 remaining in the second half.
Despite the Mustangs opening up the contest with a huge 3-pointer to control their only lead of the contest at the 18:26 mark, but the Braves continued on a 16-point run during the next four minutes as the team shot 43.6 percent from the field in the game.
The Braves will open up Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday when the Black and Gold host USC Aiken (7-2, 0-0 PBC) in the second game of the doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
