Braves Rally Back From Double-Digit Deficit To Top Armstrong Atlantic

Box Score

SAVANNAH, Ga.Shahmel Brackett scored 28 of his career-high 37 points in the second half and visiting UNCP used 65 percent shooting after halftime to rally back from a 13-point deficit late in the first half and stun Armstrong Atlantic, 107-98, on Wednesday evening in Alumni Arena.

The victory marked the sixth win in the last seven outings for UNCP (18-8, 11-5 PBC), while also giving the Braves just their fifth win in 18 matchups with the Pirates in Savannah. The setback gave the Pirates (13-10, 9-7) their third-straight league loss, as well as their fifth-straight setback in the series with UNCP.

Brackett moved into eighth place on UNCP's all-time scoring list with the second 30-point performance of his career and finished the game shooting 11-of-16 from the field and did not commit a turnover. Fellow senior George Blakeney posted his PBC-leading 12th double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while frontcourt mate Ben Jacobs registered his third career double-double with 16 points and 12 boards.

Quamain Rose added 13 points, seven assists and three rebounds for the visitors, while Alex Bradley came off the bench to post 11. Aric Miller, who entered the game averaging a league-best 23.7 points per game, led Armstrong Atlantic with 25 points despite fouling out with 3:14 to play.

UNCP posted a 46-37 advantage in the rebounding column to key a 31-19 disparity in second half points, and shot 67 percent from the perimeter, including a 5-of-7 mark from downtown in the second half alone. The Black & Gold drained its first five 3-point attempts in the latter period.

Miller gave the hosts a 62-50 lead on a pair of free throws with just 70 seconds into the second half, but the Braves had whittled their deficit back to a single bucket, 67-65, on a running jumper by Rose four minutes later. The Pirates pushed their lead back out to 85-78 on Antroine Williford's tip-in at the 7:57 mark, but the visitors gave the game its fourth tie score with 5:04 to play with another jumper by Rose.

Williford gave the hosts an 88-87 lead moments later when he hit the front end of a two-shot foul, but Brackett's 3-pointer with 4:38 remaining sparked the visitors on a 12-2 run that gave them the lead for good. The Pirates cut the lead back to 101-98 on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Darius Morales with 90 seconds left, but the Braves scored the game's last six points to provide the final.

Armstrong Atlantic connected on eight 3-pointers in the first half alone and used a 12-2 run four minutes into the game to stake claim to a 17-11 lead with 12 minutes left before the intermission. A technical foul by Miller with 8:16 to play allowed the Black & Gold to climb within two points, but the Pirates used deadly accuracy from 3-point range to fuel a 10-2 run and push their advantage out to a baker's dozen, 54-41, with 30 seconds left before the break.

UNCP led by as much as four points in the early going, but a layup by Miller four minutes into the game sparked the Pirates on a 12-2 run that gave the hosts a six-point lead,  17-11, four minutes later. A technical foul by Miller with 8:16 left before the intermission allowed the Braves to climb within two points, but the Pirates answered again, this time with a 10-2 that pushed their advantage out to a dozen points, 48-36, on two free throws by Eric Eversley at the 2:00 mark.

The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they return home to battle PBC East rival Flagler (11-13, 7-10) in the second half of a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader inside the English E. Jones Center. The Saints defeated the Braves, 83-76, two weeks ago in St. Augustine, Fla.
