Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – Jazmine Kemp finished with a double-double, including a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as Armstrong topped the UNCP women's basketball team, 71-61, on Wednesday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest inside of the Alumni Arena.
The Lady Braves (11-14, 5-11 PBC) have split the regular season with the Lady Pirates (10-13, 5-11) as each team won on their home court. Armstrong snapped a two-game UNCP win streak in the all-time series, and improved to 24-14 all-time against the Black and Gold.
Kemp turned in 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. The sophomore forward has recorded double-doubles in back-to-back outings for the Black and Gold. Courtney Bolton also scored in double figures for the Lady Braves, totaling 12 points. Wayne Mack came off of the bench for UNCP and chipped in nine points. UNCP has been out-rebounded by its opponents in consecutive games, losing the rebounding contest with Armstrong, 45-33.
Armstrong was led by a trio of athletes scoring in double-digits, including 20 points off the bench from Karolina Rykowska. Tyler Carlson and Demisha Mills contributed 15 poitns and 14 points, respectively. The Lady Pirates saw their biggest advantage in perimeter shooting, connecting on 13-of-30 (43.3 percent) from behind the arc, compared to just three 3-pointers made by UNCP.
"Our defensive effort was not very good in the second half. Karolina Rykowska really got it going and went off on us, but we gave her some good looks. They shot the ball extremely well. Some of the credit goes to them and some goes to our lack of defense in the second half," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "We did some decent things offensively, we went to the free throw line and didn't have a lot of turnovers, so we did some nice things on offense."
UNCP took a seven-point lead into the reaming 20 minutes, but back-to-back 3-point buckets from Stephenie Coney quickly cut Armstrong's deficit to one point, 32-31. The Lady Pirates opened the second half on a 14-2 run to take the lead over the Lady Braves, 39-34 only three minutes into the half. Armstrong's commanding 3-point attack in the second half rattled the Lady Braves, as the Lady Pirates shot 66.7 percent (8-12) from downtown in the final half. Armstrong took its largest lead of the night, 66-49, after Mauri Wells drained a jump shot. UNCP used the final six minutes to fight its way back, making good on three trips to the free throw line. With 11 seconds remaining, Amelia Partin drilled a trey for a final score of 71-61 in favor of the Lady Pirates.
Partin hit a triple just seconds in the game which sparked an 11-0 opening run by the Black and Gold. The Lady Braves controlled the tempo of the entire first half, never letting Armstrong catch up. A 3-point buck from Carlson brought Armstrong within four, 24-20, but UNCP would score the next six points, stretching its lead back to double-digits, 30-20. Mills hit a trey for Armstrong with 12 seconds remaining before the intermission, but the Lady Braves would carry a 32-25 advantage into half time.
The Lady Braves will return to the court on Saturday in PBC matchup against Flagler (13-10, 10-7) in Pembroke inside of the English E. Jones Center. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
