Box Score 2 MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Drew Alford gave visiting UNCP a 5-0 lead on a RBI single with two outs in the fifth inning, but Montevallo knotted the game back up heading to the seventh and then got a walk-off RBI single with one out in the 10th inning to post a series-clinching 7-6 victory over the No. 12 Braves on Sunday evening at Johnson Field.
The setback marked the first time that the Braves (11-3, 3-3 PBC) have dropped consecutive games since the final month of the 2012 campaign. Montevallo (8-6, 3-3) improved to 4-2 all-time against the Black & Gold with the result.
Jordan Edgerton turned in a 2-for-5 hitting line, while Brett Huffman and Ben Schmucker each registered 2-for-4 days at the plate, to pace a 13-hit attack for UNCP who also notched four extra-base knocks in the game as well. Vinny Rodriguez and Andrew Hill each drove in a pair of runs on 3-for-5 performances to lead Montevallo.
Neither starter got a decision for the second-straight game as Connor Pratt (0-1) took the loss for UNCP despite allowing just one earned run on three hits in 2-2/3 innings of relief. Closer Cody Hughes (1-0) registered his second decision of the day, this time picking up the win after striking out three and yielding just three hits in 1-2/3 innings from the hill.
UNCP took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but the Falcons capitalized on three free passes in the bottom of the frame to plate a trio of runs, and then tied the game back up on consecutive RBI doubles in the sixth. The Braves went back out in front of Huffman's run-scoring double in the seventh, but Montevallo drew a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the frame to set the table for a RBI single by Rodriguez that knotted the contest up again.
Schmucker singled to lead off the 10th and then moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Alford but, after a one-out single by Drew Cole moments later, the Falcons snuffed out a squeeze attempt by the Braves and gunned down Schmucker at the plate.
Montevallo put its first two batters on in the bottom of the frame via a leadoff single and a bean ball, and Hill delivered a RBI single to left field two batters later.
UNCP will close out a four-game road trip on Wednesday when it heads to Hartsville, S.C., to battle region rival Coker (9-3) in 2 p.m. contest at Tom J. New Field.
